Military investigators are looking into last week’s death of a decorated soldier from Modesto after his return to Kentucky from combat in Afghanistan.
Friends, family and comrades-in-arms pay fond Internet tributes to Spc. Cody James Moore, 21, as a caring, fun-loving young man and loyal soldier whose unexpected death saddened many.
Moore was a truck driver with an Army unit deployed from Fort Hood, Texas, from September 2008 to June 2009. He was awarded the Combat Action Badge, reserved for soldiers who personally engage the enemy.
He also was honored with the Army Achievement Medal for meritorious noncombat service; the NATO Medal for North Atlantic Treaty Organization operations; and the Afghan Campaign Medal, according to an Army spokesman.
Shortly after the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division’s return, the unit was reassigned to Fort Knox, Ky., and he arrived there in November, Fort Knox spokesman Ryan Brus said Friday.
“The Fort Knox community mourns the loss of this soldier,” he said.
So do many in Modesto and far beyond, judging from a Facebook page established in Moore’s memory by his family. Notes include references to band at Downey High School, attending La Loma Junior High School and numerous memories of good times in Modesto.
“In Afghanistan, you helped me out so much from being on the brink of destruction,” a fellow soldier wrote in one tribute. Others refer to Moore as “very cool,” “down to earth,” and “a go-getter” and “a very hard worker” in the Army.
