Sgt Eriq Joel “Shank” Sapp Aquino USMC

August 8, 2001 – December 14, 2023

TACRON – Tactical Air Control Squadron

Eriq Joel Sapp Aquino, age 22, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma, Arizona, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023. Eriq was born in Los Angeles, California, to Jewel Sapp-Aquino and Jose Aquino. After graduating high school in Lincoln City, Oregon, he immediately pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a Marine, celebrating his 18th birthday in boot camp.

Throughout his service, Sgt. Aquino was stationed in MCAS Yuma but always held San Diego close to his heart. Driven by his love for service, he volunteered for five deployments, embodying the commitment and courage of the Marine Corps.

Eriq had an adventurous spirit and a deep love for the outdoors, mirrored only by his love for his family, including his two siblings, Ronny and Celina. From the age of four, Eriq’s passion for the military was evident. He spent his childhood wearing camo, playing with toy guns, and climbing on everything he could. Birthdays and holidays were filled with requests for Nerf guns and military-themed gifts, reflecting the dream he later made a reality.

Known for his kind and generous heart, Eriq was always ready to lend a helping hand. Proudly a “Mama’s boy,” he frequently called home despite the challenges of distance and limited visits.

His call sign, “Shank,” came from a moment of bravery when he disarmed a civilian who had assaulted a fellow Marine. Eriq’s courage in that situation was just one of many stories shared by those who served alongside him, stories that continue to inspire and honor his memory. Promoted to Sergeant at just 22 years old, he was deeply committed to the Marine Corps and lived with integrity and pride.

Eriq’s family remembers him as a hero, not only for his service but for the love and light he brought into their lives. His legacy continues through efforts to raise awareness and support for those affected by the struggles faced by service members.

California will always be home, and it is where Eriq rests, surrounded by his family and the love that will never fade.

Not a day goes by when you are not loved and missed.
