SGT Christopher James Gebert
08/29/17

Christopher James “Jamie” Gebert, 37, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jamie grew up in New Haven and was the eldest son of Jeffrey Gebert Sr., and Lisa and Richard Bush. Growing up he was known by “Jamie” to family, and later in his adult, military life as “Chris.” After high school graduation, Chris joined the Army where he graduated from Fort Benning, Georgia in June 2000, and eventually became a Staff Sergeant training new recruits. He was a patriot who went on to proudly serve his country for 12 years in both active duty and reserves. He loved his family dearly and he was a “doer,” always ready to help anyone in need regardless of the task. Surviving along with his parents, are his children, Austin, Jordan and Dylan Gebert of Clarksville, Tennessee; brothers Nicholas and Donald R. Gebert, both of New Haven, Jessee Gebert of Crystal River, Florida, Cooper and Kyle Bush, both of Huntertown, Indiana; grandparents Robert Lucas of Inverness, Florida, Marilyn Gebert of New Haven, and Rick and Shelia Bush of Sparta, Tennessee; multiple uncles, an aunt, nieces and nephews. Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Phyllis Lucas, Donald E. Gebert, and Beverly Gebert; an infant brother Jeffrey O. Gebert Jr, and an aunt and uncles. Service is 5:00 pm, Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue, with calling from 2:00 pm until the service. Memorials may be made to Christopher’s Children’s Educational Fund, in care of Lisa Bush.
————————————————————————————-
A man of faith, loyalty and service, Sergeant Christopher James Gebert lost his final battle on August 29, 2017.

During his twelve-year enlistment with the United States Army, Chris earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, eventually training new recruits. His achievements include, but are not limited to: the Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Ribbon and Airborne Badge.

As with so many veterans, Chris struggled with acclimating into civilian life. A retired Army Recruiter shared, “Chris discussed reenlistment every time we spoke. Even when I wasn’t a Recruiter, Chris would ask if I could, ‘get him back in’; it is a fair assessment to say Chris missed the brotherhood and camaraderie the Army affords. He loved serving.”

Chris leaves behind three children (still at home), unable to meet the financial demands associated with their father’s untimely death.

It is our family’s great honor to have been a part of Chris’ life, and on behalf of Chris, to raise funds in efforts to bury him. Please, kindly consider a contribution or an offering of thanks to a great American patriot and hero, as we are now a part of the veteran family, forged by fire.

In loving thanks,
The Family of Christopher Gebert
